Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
What is NLP?
NLP is the study of what works in thinking, language and behaviour. It is a way of coding and reproducing excellence that enables you to consistently achieve the results that you want both for yourself, for your business and for your life. (from NLP at Work, by Sue Knight).
How can it help me make changes?
All behaviour is driven by the programs, or associations, running our minds, most of which have been adopted unconsciously throughout our lives. Many of these programs are helpful. They mean we don't have to re-learn how to get dressed or drive a car each day. Some are not so useful, and may actually hold us back, such as repeating patterns that don't work, stopping us from doing what we want or keeping us doing something we don't want.
NLP can empower you to run your own mind. It incorporates a set of powerful tools to:
- allow you to choose new ideas that will help you make the changes you want
- let you transform your state (the feelings and postures that drive how you feel and what you do) using both your body and your mind
- dramatically improve your motivation towards the things you want
So do we just talk?
No, there is far more to NLP than just talking, although talking is part of what we do, and you would be amazed at how powerful just changing the language we use and the questions we ask ourselves can be.
Some of the NLP techniques include guided visualization (getting you to imagine things), talking to the unconscious mind (to get at the often hidden root of problems), modeling what works well and transferring the skills to other areas.
These various tools and techniques have been shown to embed changes deeply and quickly.
How does imagining things make a difference?
When your imagination is engaged your creativity can flourish, helping you to know more clearly what you want, heighten your energy levels and find new and effective ways to accomplish your dreams.
Our brains have two halves - in most cases the left, logical half that we use to reason and make decisions, and the right, emotional half, where our imagination and creativity reside.
Using guided visualisation your practitioner can lead you through a relaxing process in which your day-to-day left-brain thought can quieten, bringing balance so that both aspects of your mind work in harmony to find the inspiration and solutions you need.
